Steve Neely takes Penn’s revamped classic for a spin.

If you’re on a budget, the Nexave 3000SFD reel looks a very tempting prospect.

The new Okuma Cortez is a real workhorse with a rigid one-piece graphite frame and side plates plus an adjustable magnetic cast-control system. Available in two sizes, CZ-10CS and CZ-12CS, it has five stainless-steel ball bearings and 303-grade stainless-steel gears with a powerful 4.1:1 ratio to tame huge fish. It has a swept-in handle with a large Ergo-Grip handle knob for balance and the star drag has a smooth carbonite drag system. The red anodised, machined-aluminum spools have capacity of 42 metres of 0.37mm line on the CZ-10CS and 500 metres of 0.42mm on the CZ-12CS.

Okuma is justifiably proud of its Metaloid range of multipliers, which come in single-speed or twin- speed variants.
The Penn Squall range of reels is deservedly popular. This 30-sized example is a big reel with plenty of line capacity, making it ideal for big fish and deep water. With a 4.9:1 gear ratio it’s no slouch, and twin sealed bearings make it a smooth operator.
With a light graphite body and three bearings, this is a decent entry-level surf reel. Built for simple, fuss-free fishing, the Iridium Dream is a bit of a revelation.
Already enthusiastically received, these sealed fixed-spool reels from Cinnetic look ideal for lure fishing.
It’s hard to think of any better-regarded multiplier reels than the Penn Mag series. Since their inception they’ve set standards for reliability and ease of use that have attracted, and more importantly kept, large numbers of happy users.
The Penn Fathom 12 multiplier reel is the smallest in the Fathom range, but don’t let that put you off.
